May Newsletter

Dear colleagues,

Attached is our another monthly  Newsletter, which became, thanks to our very own Arjang Hedayati, a source of important information and interesting events outside and inside of our branch.
An addition to that he never forgets to recognize a good jobs of our teachers and board members.
This time I want to take an opportunity to recognize his job as a recording secretary and a publisher of our newsletters.

Thank you dear Arjang for sharing with us your talents and for your devotion to the branch.

Please tell your students that MP3 players, cameras, cell phones or backpacks will not be allowed in the theory testing rooms.

At evaluations, your students have the choice of starting with either technique or sight-reading.  Make sure measures are numbered at the start of each system.  Advise your students that they should not bring photocopied music or any personal items into the evaluation room.

After evaluations are over, please check your students evaluation results online and let me know if there are any discrepancies.  The CM Council encourages you to make a photocopy of the front page of each student’s theory test (after they are returned to the them in April) and of their performance results to keep on file in their studios.

Please advise your students that they should arrive at
least 10 minutes before their evaluation is scheduled to begin.

For the theory test on Sunday, March 21, please have your students
arrive at approximately the same time as their scheduled evaluation the
following week.  If their evaluation is before 9 a.m., add an hour to
their time (i.e. if the evaluation is at 8:20 a.m., have your student
come for the theory test at 9:20 a.m.).  If their evaluation is late in
the day, have your student come early enough to finish the test by 5
p.m.

If you have submitted any students for Branch Honors consideration, be
sure you know the length (in minutes and seconds) of all of their
pieces.  That way if your student is chosen, you can tell the Branch
Honors team how long the selected piece is.

Thank You.

CM Chair, SFEV Branch

Bylaws updated

Dear colleagues,

We spent many hours (with all the reading, discussing, e-mailing back and forth, consulting with the state representatives) to get to this point.
Please take it seriously, read it and if you’ll come with any suggestions do not hesitate to let us know.
The final reading will be on our next meeting on January 25.
I have to mention, that the hardest part of this job has been done by Connie Kuhne.
We are very lucky to have you Connie. I really appreciate your knowledge,
professionalism and very friendly help.

Thank you all,

Dilara Khalilova.

IMPORTANT CM INFORMATION

Although most of you probably already received the following information from Pamela, we thought we’d include it here as well.

January 2 Database open for entering evaluation information and repertoire online. Please take your time to enter all the required evaluation information online correctly and completely. Do realize that how you enter your repertoire information, especially for potential Convention students, reflects how you want it to appear in the Program Book, individual recital programs, etc.
–Don’t use all caps
–Don’t use all lower case (unless the composer specifies this)
–Enter enough info to be able to look up a piece (Sonata in C Major by Mozart is not enough)
–Enter movements by the name or tempo (movement number is not enough [unless no other info is available], but may be included as well)
–Enter more than the last name of a composer when doing otherwise would be vague. It’s easier and more efficient to remove information later than to make educated guesses when it comes time to print.
Note: This year the convention will also have a Master Class on the works of Martha Mier. If you would like your student to be considered for this Master Class, then have your student select a piece by Martha Mier to be one of his or her CM pieces and enter your student for consideration for either a Festival Recital or New Materials Recital.

JANUARY 13TH

SARA COMPINSKY MASTER CLASS
10:00 AM
HOME OF RONNA BINN-HERSH

Guest Leader: Mack McCray

As mentioned above, Ben Han will be playing the first movement of the Tchaikovsky piano concerto with his teacher Mark Richman on second piano.

Here is more about this exceptional young man from Mark Richman:

“Ben-han is also performing the Liszt Tarantella, the Barber 3rd Excursion, the Beethoven complete Op. 78 Sonata, the Bach Prelude and Fugue in am from WTC I, and the other two movements of the Tchaikovsky Concerto for both the Spotlight Competition at the Music Center and the Bronislaw Kaper Competition at Disney Hall. Ben-han is very talented–especially considering he was born practically deaf! He uses state-of-the art hearing aids which enable him to hear sounds. I (Mark Richman) think you will be rather amazed by him. I (M. Richman) did not pick this concerto for him–he insisted on learning it, as he is also an accomplished violinist and has studied the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto–can you imagine? His solo pieces are absolutely stunning, so I think the best use of the class instruction will be on this first movement, and it should be fun for the audience.”

Please try and attend this incredibly unique master class! Hope to see you all there!
